Mentors are usually people who have walked in your shoes, made the decisions you will need to make, and who are now in the place you would like to be in your future vision. They have been there, done that and worn the T-shirt. They know what it takes to succeed, and also what success looks like on the other side. A good mentor will allow you to use their power of hindsight to follow their path and gain an insight to your future self. They are somebody who you can look to for valuable answers, guidance and reassurance, through your own individual journey.

1. Provide honest, constructive criticism and advise where improvements are needed.

 

In order to succeed you need to measure your achievements but also be open to acknowledge your weaknesses. Nobody likes to admit the areas they fall short on, but it is important to recognize these and use them to move forward. Mentors can highlight problem areas, which are not always obvious to ourselves, and determine where to focus your strengths in order to excel.

 

2. Provide Information and knowledge from a hindsight perspective.

 

Wouldn’t it be great if every decision we made in life involved a step into the future to see what that decision resulted in? Obviously we will never have that luxury, but a mentor does provide an element of hindsight, as they have had to make similar decisions themselves and can advise where your decisions are likely to lead.
